How You Can Help:
Our new Spay/Neuter Fund

All adopter's of pets from the shelter are provided with spay/neuter vouchers and we carefully explain to them that it is the law in the state of Missouri that all animals adopted from a shelter must be spayed or neutered.  Although the majority of people comply, there are some who do not.  We try to follow up by sending reminder cards but, unfortunately, we have no enforcement capabilities.

In a desperate effort to stop the explosion of unwanted pets we are now starting a Spay/Neuter Fund.  This fund will be used to spay/neuter every animal possible before they leave our shelter.

All donations to this project will be kept in a separate account and used only for this purpose, so if you would like to donate to our fund, please mark your donation - "For Spay/Neuter Fund".

Our dream is to receive enough money so that perhaps in the future we would be able to help people of lower income households with the expense of spaying and neutering their pets.

Any help that you can give us with this project will be greatly appreciated!

Guardian Angel Program

The Guardian Angel Program allows individuals to provide a future for a special Humane Society dog or cat.  By becoming an angel, you provide food, vet care and housing for a special animal at the Humane Society.  Many of the cats and dog in the program have been at our shelter far too long and some many have medical problems, and some just need special care and love.  In joining the program you have the chance to make life better for a special cat or dog.

Call us at the Humane Society and let us know that you would like to be a Guardian Angel.  You can start your sponsorship over the phone or by coming to the shelter to fill out the forms.

What you do

  • You pay the $25 to join the program.  This takes care of your animal for the first month.  The sponsorship is $25.00 per month until adoption has been successful into a loving home
  • You may pay the monthly fee by mail on in person at the shelter.

What you get

  • A picture and information on the animal you are becoming an angel for.
  • A special card hung on the animals cage to indicate that you are their angel.
  • You will be notified when your cat or dog is adopted
  • Your name will be printed in our "PAWS" newsletter.
  • Many, many licks of gratitude from all of the angel's at our Shelter.

Spay and neuter your pets:
The only way our nation's pet over population problem will ever be solved is if people spay and neuter their pets.  Your pet will receive many medical and behavioral benefits.  Animals who are now in shelters will have a better chance of finding homes.
Be a responsible pet owner:
The responsibility of pet ownership does not stop with a bowl of food and water.  Your pet should have shelter from the elements.  Your pet should be seen regularly by a veterinarian and receive its annual vaccinations.  Your pet should be obedience trained (even cats can be humanely trained to discontinue inappropriate behavior).  Most of all, your pet should be loved.  Teach your children to respect animals.  Learn more about responsible pet care by visiting our Education page.
Become a Humane Society member:
You can provide financial support to the shelter by becoming a member or by simply making a cash donation.   Please see our Membership Page for additional information.

Volunteers Needed:
Used Pet Salesperson - The shelter always needs more volunteers. Our dedicated staff and existing volunteers are able to keep the shelter running, to keep the animals clean, fed, and medicated, and to attract the minimum funds necessary to do this important work. But there is so much more we could do with more volunteers! Following are some of the ways you can help.

Pup Playmates and Kitty Cuddlers -The shelter orphans need more individualized attention. Because we do not routinely euthanize, it is even more important that people take the time to come to the shelter to interact with the dogs and cats. There are dogs and cats who have lived at the shelter for more than a year. The dogs need to get out of their runs for a daily walk and some play time! The more the cats and dogs are handled, the better their chances for a quick adoption.

Foster Homes - The shelter often receives requests to take in litters of newborn kittens or puppies. Occasionally, an animal has been injured and needs a quiet place to recuperate. Many shelters would euthanize these animals. We prefer to place these animals in foster homes until they are adoptable. Although it is somewhat difficult to give up a pet you have fostered, it is extremely satisfying to know you gave the animal a chance at a happy life and to see it placed into a loving, forever home.

Satellite Adoptions - Many of our adoptions take place at PETsMART in Springfield on the fourth weekend every month. We need volunteers to help set up cages, walk dogs, and talk with the public about pet care.

Education - VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED  If we are to solve the problems of pet overpopulation and animal abuse, we must get in front of the public with our message. We are always seeking volunteers to talk to local schools and community groups about responsible pet ownership, the benefits of spaying and neutering, and other topics related to animal care. If public speaking is your special talent, please consider helping in this important area.

Nursing Home Visits - Many senior citizens find the hardest part about going into an extended care facility is the loss of their pets. Research shows that stroking an animal’s fur has many health benefits, including reduced blood pressure. We are looking for volunteers to transport pets to local nursing homes. If you have a gentle pet that would be a good candidate for this program, please contact us. If you are interested, but don’t have a suitable pet, contact us anyway. There are shelter pets who you can take on these visits.

Thrift Shop - This is our major source of our funding for the shelter.  The shop, which is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00am to 4:00pm.  If you have questions, call the Thrift Shop @ (417) 723-8331

Fund-raising - If you are creative and imaginative, please consider helping the shelter with its fund raising efforts. If you belong to a neighborhood, social or business organization, please consider doing a fund raiser such as a bake sale, garage sale, auction, etc., to help your animal shelter.

Groomers, Trainers, Behaviorists - Of course, some of the shelter animals don’t have the best social skills, especially those who have been at the shelter for an extended period. Some of the animals are frightened. Others are aggressive or rambunctious. In order to improve their chances for adoption, we always need experienced animal handlers. We also need volunteers to help bathe and groom the animals in preparation for their outings to satellite adoptions.

Transportation - Some shelter animals are transported to a satellite adoption location almost every week. We are looking for people who can help transport the animals in the shelter van. Also, we need volunteers with trucks or vans who can occasionally help deliver items to special events, such as our annual garage sale and auction.  Because of a shortage of volunteers, we have had to suspend this service.  If you are able to give a few hours of your weekend to help us continue this program, please call us at (417) 272-8113 or email us at admin@humanesociety-branson.org

Handy Man - The shelter occasionally needs minor electrical and repair work. Every dollar saved is a dollar which can be used for our building fund, medicine, food, etc.  Of course, we're interested in hand-women too!

Remember, their best hope is us…our ONLY hope is you!
